July: What’s on the bench?

‘Latmore’ tree trunk slice coffee table in spalted beech: This collection received a recent commission at Dorset Art Weeks. There are still slices available with one in the making on the workbench, and another already completed and in the Sou’-Sou’-West Arts Gallery, Symondsbury.

The naturally occurring spalting is caused by fungal growth through the tree creating colours and textures.  It was the trees weakness in life, but now its beauty as a piece of furniture.  The windfallen tree came from farmland called Latmore, hence the name.

‘Monkton’ tree trunk slice coffee table in spalted beech: We have the last triangular-ish slice from this amazing beech tree on the workbench, which will be ready to go into a gallery or feature at the Devon Open Studios in September (Alex’s home workshop in Seaton will be open for this!). It’s yours to grab direct before then!

‘Brooks’ burr oak tree trunk slice coffee table: There are 8 various sized slices left from this particular oak tree and I hope to have the piece we’re working on, finished for the September Devon Open Studios event. A small ‘Brooks’ sold at Dorset Art Weeks and was being given as a wedding gift!

‘Coney’ waney edge wooden side table: We have a commission to make 2 Coney tree slice bedside tables at 650mm tall, which is taller than the standard height of a coffee table (420mm), but perfect for a bedside or sofa side table. A shelf can also be incorporated for additional functionality.

‘Prime’ ancient oak tree trunk slice coffee table: We have a few slices from this grand old tree, at approximately 1.2metres in diameter it is our second largest tree slice table size (behind the ‘Pass’ maple tree at 1.4metres diameter).

‘Chapman’ spalted beech tree trunk slice coffee/side tables: This is a slightly smaller example of the organic edge tables from my portfolio. These can be used as coffee tables or side tables and work in slightly smaller rooms. I have various slice shapes and sizes, some which I will make taller at approximately 650mm and will perhaps incorporate a shelf to be used as a bedside or sofa side table set. Images soon!
