I have been working as a furniture maker professionally since 2006, creating both indoor and outdoor pieces.

Although I’m originally from Dorset, I initially worked in London, but found that there was a limit to the organic beauty of the wood available from the standard timber yards.

I moved back to Dorset and joined my brother’s business, Ed Brooks Furniture, to run the workshop and turn the designs and concepts into working pieces. Ed Brooks Furniture specialises in outdoor furniture using English hardwoods.

I now head up my own workshop but continue to work closely with our family on all things furniture related. My Dad manages our woodland which supplies much of the wind fallen timber for the projects and I now also employ Mark who came on board a few years ago and makes many of the pieces at the Dorset workshop with me.

It’s great to live and work in such a beautiful part of the country where I am able to go into the forest and see raw, wind fallen timber. I can then decide exactly how I want to cut and shape the wood to accentuate its natural beauty.

I really enjoy working with large pieces of timber where I can capture and visually display the colours, textures, natural growth patterns and marks made by the movement of a tree throughout its life.

Getting a really fine finish on a piece of furniture is like the mist clearing, you know you have crafted a piece of furniture that someone will love and appreciate – it’s an amazing and exciting experience.

Though some of our pieces appear simple in design, they are very complex in the making. And, due to the nature of the raw materials in our collection, no two pieces are alike.

My Dad: he keeps his ear to the ground about the beautiful pieces of timber we use & is in charge of all the big machinery. I also need to mention my brother Ed, who I have worked with as long as my Dad on outdoor furniture pieces (Ed Brooks Furniture). And my Mum who is a constant support to me & the business.

Mark Wills Alex Brooks

Mark: who as well as being an old friend from school, originally worked with us on the photography side of things. He now makes many of the pieces alongside me. He has a real eye for it all, especially the fine finishing details.

Portia McMenemy Octopus small business solutions

Portia: not only is she Mark’s wife, she also works with me on the admin and marketing side of things to keep the day to day business side of things running along & evolving.
