We were contacted about two magnificent grand ash trees that had fallen naturally near to us (not due to dieback). So far we have made a number of cube side tables and tree trunk slice coffee tables from these.
The cube side tables allow us to see all the grain features and figures at the end and along the grain, such as the distinctive cathedral pattern, with luxurious light and darker brown tones.
But in my opinion the end grain is even more breathtaking.
With the tree trunk slice tables such as the ‘Pitt’ coffee table we aim to fully showcase and frame all of the incredible end grain features, starting with the strong growth rings. These are interrupted and twist around decorative knots, which changes the grain direction offering what’s known as quilting and ribbon curls.
Spalting also features, which is the fungal growth through the trees that probably caused them to fall in the first place but now creates a myriad of colours, tones and textures through the wood.
Well worth seeing and enjoying….
